Sixty-two artisans whose timepieces feature everything from their own tourbillon designs to Greco-Roman themes are highlighted in “Independent Watchmakers,” a new book by Steve Huyton.
“I wanted to showcase timepieces, brands and watchmakers that people had never heard of from different regions around the world,” said Mr. Huyton, 51. (He included his own made-to-order brand, Paolo Mathai Horology, which he established in 2015 in Adelaide, Australia.)
The book, to be published by ACC Art Books on May 20 in Britain and May 29 in the United States, was drawn from an initial list of about 150 watchmakers that Mr. Huyton said were chosen for their originality and included his personal favorites.
Of those who made it into the final volume, some follow family tradition, like Aaron Becsei of Bexei, a third-generation watchmaker based in Budapest who creates tourbillon designs. Others decided to go solo after working for large brands, like Rémi Maillat, 35, who left Cartier and created his own Swiss brand, called Krayon.
It also includes Antti Ronkko of Finland, 43, who turned his watchmaking hobby into a business — making Greco-Roman themed timepieces — after he left Nokia in 2012. Now, he said, by making his own parts he “can choose mechanics and finishings which are not able to be manufactured in mass production.”
Airplane-inspired watches are the specialty of Austin Ivey, 38, who formed his company, Tockr, in 2016. “I wanted to tap into my creative side which I hadn’t been able to utilize,” he said, while working for his family’s oil and gas business, which was sold to a private equity firm in 2014.
And skeletonized timepieces occupy Michal Molnar, 38, co-owner of the Slovakian company Molnar Fabry. “We try to make everything that is possible in our studio,” he said, even customizing the Swiss movements that the brand buys.
But fulfilling orders can be difficult for independent makers. Masahiro Kikuno, 36, said he was not taking new orders this year as he already has customers waiting until 2021 for deliveries (he makes only up to three watches each year). “I must make these, and I want to develop new watches,” the Japanese watchmaker wrote in an email.
Demand for independently made timepieces has been rising in recent years, but Mr. Huyton estimated that 40 percent of the watchmaking businesses included in his book would not survive. Yet several of the brands have ambitious plans, including Molnar Fabry’s efforts to unveil its first in-house tourbillon in the next two years and Tockr’s work to grow its presence in Neiman Marcus to 10 stores from four by Christmas.B:
